.VP Kamala Harris lamented the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, saying it was “so fundamentally about freedom.” Harris made the comments on MSNBC, contending that the government must stay out of individuals' healthcare decisions.
In light of this weekend marking the first anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court decision, Harris appeared on MSNBC’s The ReidOut with host Joy Reid and contended that the government must stay out of individuals' healthcare decisions.“This issue, Joy, as you mentioned, is so fundamentally about freedom,” Harris said. “Freedom — the freedom and the ability of the individual to make decisions about their own life and literally their own body.
“Hey, trust women!” Harris continued. “Trust them to know what is in their best interest. What are we saying that a bunch of people in a state capitol or Washington, D.C. are in a better position to make a decision for her than she is in terms in what is in her best interest, the best interest of her family.”
Harris noted the importance of electing congressional leaders who will support legislation in order to restore Roe v. Wade. “We have got to understand the connection between this issue and elections. Elections matter,” Harris said. “We need a United States Congress who understands and appreciates … the individual right, the privacy right, of people to make this decision, not having the government make this decision for them.”On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court returned the fight over abortion rights to the states in a 6-3 ruling.
“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” a syllabus of the opinion said.
