Oulton and Sons Ltd., with their son, Ty, received the 2008 Atlantic Outstanding Young Farmers award.Here's a look at what was making the news 15 and 50 years ago in the Hants Journal.• A family of 13 managed to escape a hobby farm fire in Noel on March 20. Bruce Doucette told the Journal that a smoke alarm alerted the sleeping family, which consisted of Doucette, his wife, parents, brother, brother’s fiancé, and seven children.

David Barkhouse, of the Nova Scotia Forest Technicians Association, pictured on the right, presented a certificate to Fred Scott, of St. Croix, in 1973 as he was considered the owner of the largest white elm tree in Nova Scotia and possibly the biggest tree in the province. It was reported the elm stood 15 feet high and had a circumference of 225 inches. - File• After months of planning, the Windsor Leo Club received its charter.

• Shane Lydon won the Garth Pulsifer Trophy at the annual Pulsifer Speech Festival in Windsor. Coleen Walsh finished second and Doreen Armstrong finished in third place. More than 200 students competed. Elmer the Safety Elephant helped teach youngsters across Hants County six basic safety rules in 1973. Pictured with Elmer, which was constructed of paper mache, were students John Nichols, Tina Redman, Michael Fitzpatrick and Kenneth Warren. - File

• Hants Co-Op Home and Farm supply Centre was having a ‘clean-up, fix-up, paint-up’ sale. Some of the deals included a quart of paint for $2.37, vinyl flooring for $2.95 per yard, and a six-foot wooden step ladder for $9.95.
