The number of referees being attacked in games these days seems to be increasing – from verbal abuse to physical attacks during and after games. Refs need to be strong, writes Errol Sweeney

I know I’ve touched on this very thorny subject before and I will continue to do so because it needs to be highlighted.

A lot of it, in my opinion, is because of the near saturation point of live games on TV and the unwillingness of the powers that be to show real leadership and clamp down on such behaviour. The players will sometimes go to extraordinary lengths to get a free kick, a penalty kick, a corner kick – and if that means trying to hoodwink the referee to get it, then they will do it.

This is not the right way to coach youngsters. And what’s even worse is that parents are on the touch line also shouting at the referee.Hanging judge I Ref abuse continues unabated
