One hundred and forty-four years after his death, Gassy Jack continues to fascinate Vancouverites.
Gassy Jack Deighton was apparently quite a storyteller. But he doesn’t seem to have been much of a businessman.
How do we know? Because a handwritten list of Gassy Jack’s debts from 1875 is being sold this Saturday at an All Nations Stamp and Coin online auction. “And there’s the loan, still appearing after he was dead. And of course, his brother Tom was working for him, Tom and his wife. That’s why he has such a big bill — that’s their wages from Deighton House.”
In Sept. 1867, he moved to Burrard Inlet and set up a hotel just outside the timber lease of Stamp’s Mill . This allowed him to sell booze to the mill workers. Upper Canada is now Ontario. Brock was a British military commander whose forces scored several victories against the Americans before he was killed in the Battle of Queenston Heights on Oct. 13, 1812.
Visually the most interesting item is a letter from the Cariboo Gold Fields to Mrs. Robert Harkness in Iroquois, Canada West in 1864 .
