A Hammond teen, 16, has been charged as an adult in Lake Superior Court after allegedly robbing a guy outside the Village Discount Outlet, then shooting a man inside a nearby restaurant.
The Post-Tribune is not naming him, because he is a minor. He is being held at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond, records show.
Hammond Police responded to the Village, 2706 165th Street, where the robbery victim said he was waiting for his wife, when a young man approached him at 5:26 p.m. Nov. 22 holding two guns and demanding his wallet.Minutes later, police were called at 5:34 p.m. for a reported shooting inside the Latin Bliss restaurant, 6247 Kennedy Avenue — less than a half-mile north.
The man said he was working by the front register, when a young man came in with two guns and said he wanted cash in the register. The two “exchanged words” and he punched the teen in the face. The teen shot the man in the right leg, before taking off, court records show.Police sent out surveillance pictures to officers. A juvenile detective provided two possible suspects from other crimes.
The teen was later arrested on an unrelated gun charge. He was one of two and matched from a fingerprint on a soda can used by the alleged robber at the restaurant. He was charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted robbery resulting in bodily injury, armed robbery, all level 3 felonies; battery by means of a deadly weapon, intimidation, dangerous possession of a firearm, all level 5 felonies; and two counts of pointing a firearm, both level 6 felonies.
