Halton Healthcare becomes the first hospital system in Canada to partner with the PaRx program, which prescribes nature as a preventative healthcare measure. The program, endorsed by the Canadian Medical Association, encourages patients to incorporate outdoor experiences into their daily routines. PaRx is a national initiative driven by the BC Parks Foundation and supported by medical professionals across Canada.

“This is a program that we have developed with physicians all across Canada, and it’s endorsed by the Canadian Medical Association,” said Andrew Day, CEO of the BC Parks Foundation. “It identifies nature as a part of people’s health-care plans, and it enables health-care professionals, including your local GP, to add a prescription for nature as part of your health and well-being.”Day pointed to the connection between human health and nature as a driving force of the program.

Tom Gannon Hamilton, an author and musician in Toronto, has made good use of his nature prescription. There are now more than 16,000 health-care professionals registered to prescribe time in nature across Canada.
