The success of John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher movie Halloween made way for a franchise that has been retconned on different occasions, making way for various timelines, each with a different explanation of what drove Michael Myers to kill.

Michael was sent to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium and became the patient of Dr. Samuel Loomis , who could only conclude that Michael was the embodiment of evil.
As mentioned above, Michael Myers was sent to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium when he was six years old, and he never spoke again after killing his sister. The drawing he made when he broke into the school shows that he didn’t fully develop and he’s still a child , so he might have not been into reading books, and it’s highly unlikely that Smith’s Grove would have had books about the Celtic festival of Samhain and how it connects to Halloween.
