Halifax swimmer Keilen Bellis, 17, claimed Nova Scotia's first gold medal at the Canada Games when he finished first in the 50-metre breaststroke on Monday. - TEAM NOVA SCOTIANova Scotia claimed its first gold medal at the Canada Games courtesy of swimmer Keilen Bellis.
“It feels really good,” said Bellis, a member of the Halifax Trojans Aquatic Club. Trojans alum David Sharpe was the last men’s gold medalist in the pool from this province.Bellis touched the wall a mere .05 of a second ahead of Ontario’s Brodie Khajuria . “Keilen has worked incredibly hard to overcome health and injury issues in his return to swimming,” Bellis’s coach Mark McGrann said in a Swim Nova Scotia news release."At the start I had a good support group to help me get back into swimming and working in a team environment has also been a positive experience."
Brianna Harris of Truro was fourth in the Special Olympics 50m breaststroke and eighth in the 100m freestyle . while Lower Sackville’s Landon Arbeau was seventh in both the Special Olympics 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle .The women’s rugby sevens club kicked off tournament play with a 19-0 upset of Ontario at Brock University on Monday.The Nova Scotia men’s hoops team made a statement in its Canada Games opener.
