Last October, I shared my findings from a price comparison of like-for-like items at the major grocers in the Halifax region. I have revisited those lists.One of my lists is a mixed cross section of 29 regular grocery items and includes packaged food from the likes of Green Giant, Old El Paso, Heinz, Ben’s rice, Aylmer, Quaker and Nutella, and whole foods like bananas, tomatoes, milk, cheese, zucchini and chicken breasts.The rest were more in line with the totals: Superstore at $133.
The vegetarian list has 24 items, with packaged goods from Yves Cuisine, Silk, Annies, Amy’s, Garde-in, Little Northern, Wowbutter, Chex, Tostitos, Just Egg, Becel, Tilda and Que Pasa, while there are whole foods like celery, sweet potato, eggplant, lemons and cauliflower. Folks from the Canadian shoe icon Fluevog were in the area planning for a spring opening in the downtown of Halifax.Bar Burrito is opening a location in Upper Tantallon. They already have locations in Dartmouth and Cole Harbour. Speaking of burritos, Mary Brown’s-owned Fat Bastard Burrito will be opening somewhere in the Halifax area in 2024.
