HALIFAX, N.S. — If you get pulled over by Mounties in the Halifax area in May, be prepared to do a roadside breath test.

Throughout the month, Halifax RCMP will carry out Mandatory Alcohol Screenings with drivers who are pulled over for other traffic violations such as speeding, careless driving or missing a brake light.Mounties say drivers caught having an alcohol level over the legal limit of 0.08 could have their vehicle impounded and license suspended and potentially face impaired driving charges, among other consequences.

Those who refuse the breath tests will be charged with a failure to or refusal to comply with the demand charge. "The certainty of a Mandatory Alcohol Screening is to help discourage those consuming alcohol from getting behind the wheel," said RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment traffic unit Cpl. Chuck Simm.
