The Halifax provincial courthouse on Spring Garden Road. - Steve BruceHALIFAX, N.S. — A Halifax man who traded child pornography with other users of an alternative social-networking app has been sentenced to a year in jail, followed by 30 months’ probation.
“That is inaccurate,” the judge said. “In order for these pictures or videos to have been made, children were definitely harmed.” “A message has to be sent to anyone involved in anything like this that it cannot be in any way accepted and not viewed as a serious offence.”Crown attorney Melanie Perry told the court that officials with the networking app MeWe informed police last year that someone using an internet provider address in Halifax had uploaded three images of child pornography to the platform in December 2021.
He said it was a trade system, that someone would send you child pornography and expect something “better” in return. “It’s important that he and understand that child pornography is not a victimless crime,” the prosecutor said.Defence lawyer Brian Warcop said the fact his client concealed his illegal conduct from his fiancée shows how ashamed he was of what he was engaged in at the time.
