Population data shows municipality grew by 20,713 people in 2021-22

Crowds enjoy Spring Garden Road in this file photo from Aug. 25, 2022. Population data shows Halifax is second only to Moncton, N.B., for growth in the country. - Tim KrochakHalifax is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, second only to Moncton, N.B., between July 1, 2021 and July 1, 2022, Halifax grew 4.4 per cent with 20,713 more people. Moncton grew by 5.3 per cent.

Governments need to make sure they have the right level of infrastructure, housing and transportation to accommodate this growing population, Biggar added.“With growth comes challenges, but with those challenges come creative solutions,” she said. “And the love for Halifax across this country is incredible, so it’s not surprising we have more and more people coming here.”

Biggar said Halifax has always been a post-secondary city but traditionally has faced the challenge of retaining young folks after graduation. These numbers could be misleading, he added, because students may be counted twice, here and for where they’re coming from.
