Manny Machado drives in one run before Ha-Seong Kim's homer and one run after; Michael Wacha wins 10th game
This has been a recurring theme and part of the problem. At the least, these more-than-occasional highs have highlighted what they are capable of and accentuated the lows.
For much of the season, these types of games happened often enough to suggest promise. Lately, they seem like just another setup to a letdown. There was a shift in the wild-card standings, as the Cubs moved up and the Giants fell into the sixth spot. That allowed the Padres to gain a half-game . The Marlins fell to 1½ back, while the Reds and Diamondbacks remained a game out of the sixth NL playoff spot.
Center fielder Trent Grisham fielded Bell’s soft liner and threw on a low line to third base, where it seemed his throw would beat Arraez. But the ball bounced off Arraez’s back foot as he slid and bounced to the third base dugout, as Bell took second on the throw.The Padres were facing left-hander Ryan Weathers, who they traded to Miami on Aug. 1 for designated hitter Garrett Cooper and minor-league pitcher Sean Reynolds.
Kim led off with a flared double down the right field line, and Fernando Tatis Jr. walked before Juan Soto went down swinging for the first out. On Weathers’ first pitch to Machado, Kim and Tatis executed a double steal. Two pitches later, Machado lined a ball to the left field wall that was caught but allowed Kim to jog home.
