She narrowly misses a subway train on her way home . But what if she would have made that train? How different would her life be? The movie, which was released exactly 20 years ago today, explores that parallel universe of possibilities.
For starters, the film’s pared-back wardrobe—three-quarter-length leather jackets, cozy turtlenecks, and hip bone–hanging khaki pants—is endlessly more attainable than that of Paltrow’s other silver screen hits. Consider the uptown attire of. “It’s so classic, you could wear it now. That is what I wanted to achieve with her [Helen],” sayscostume designer Jill Taylor. “It is always that way with a movie, you make it much earlier than it is released, so if you go too ‘fashion,’ it can look dated.
According to Taylor, the film barely had a clothing budget. She and Paltrow shopped for a few items at Prada, but were ultimately saved by Calvin Klein, a friend of Paltrow’s. “We walked into the showroom and it was huge. It was just lined with rails and rails of clothes,” says Taylor. “It was fantastic. We found all of the stuff that we were absolutely looking for—the wide-leg pants, the skinny tops, the very simple roll necks, all of that type of thing.
After nailing Helen’s professional look, Taylor had one last sartorial challenge: figuring out how a down-on-her-luck version of Helen might dress. “It was very difficult to make Gwyneth look down, which we discovered to our horror because she looks great in everything,” says Taylor. To achieve the look, Taylor supplemented the outfits with her own and secondhand pieces, including an oversize weather-worn blue men’s cardigan.
