Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami won a super-G race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, marking her first victory of the season and setting the stage for the upcoming world championships. The defending overall World Cup champion, Gut-Behrami overcame challenging course conditions to secure the win, while Lindsey Vonn finished 13th.
Swiss ski star Lara Gut-Behrami has finally rediscovered her winning form, just weeks before the world championships . The defending overall World Cup champion triumphed in the final super-G race before the worlds, overcoming challenging course conditions on Sunday to secure her first victory of the season. Lindsey Vonn , meanwhile, finished 13th.Gut-Behrami demonstrated exceptional skill, navigating the tricky turns in the middle section of the Kandahar course with precision.
This victory marked her 46th career win, placing her alongside ski legends on the all-time female winners list. 'It's nice. I was skiing well for a while, still missing something, so it's great to be able to win again,' Gut-Behrami said. 'It's a challenging slope, it's not the conditions where I ski the best. It was a little bit slippery, a little bit soft. Sometimes when you don't have the perfect conditions for yourself, you stop thinking.'The world championships will be held in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, from February 4th to 16th. The first individual race will be the women's super-G on February 6th. Gut-Behrami's technical prowess was particularly evident in a challenging passage that caused difficulties for many racers - a jump followed by a sharp left turn. She finished 0.35 seconds ahead of Norway's Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, who achieved her first of eight career super-G podiums at this very slope four years ago. Federica Brignone of Italy secured third place, just three-hundredths of a second behind Vickhoff Lie, following her downhill victory on the same hill the previous day.Sofia Goggia, who was runner-up to Brignone in Saturday's downhill, finished fourth, ahead of her Italian teammates Laura Pirovano and Marta Bassino. The Italian team dominated the top six positions. Keely Cashman of the United States shared sixth place with Bassino, achieving her career-best result on a course where she suffered severe brain and knee injuries in a terrifying downhill crash in 2021. 'I know it's four years ago, but it's not something you really get over that quickly,' said Cashman, who had one previous top 10 result in 68 World Cup starts. 'To start today with a new mindset was something I was really trying to do, and have my personal best in some place like Garmisch... feels really good.'Vonn finished 1.4 seconds behind the pace, placing 13th just behind her American teammate Lauren Macuga, after failing to complete her previous two races. The American ski legend, who returned to racing in December after nearly six years of retirement with a new titanium knee, skied out of Saturday's downhill after missing a gate but managed to avoid a fall. Vonn has stated that she plans to retire again after next year's Milan-Cortina Olympics.Last year, Gut-Behrami took the lead in the overall World Cup standings from Mikaela Shiffrin in the final two months of the season when the American five-time champion was sidelined due to a knee injury. However, the Swiss skier had a slow start to the new campaign, missing the season-opening race in October. Despite the setback, she has now won at least one World Cup race in 11 out of the past 12 seasons, with the exception of 2018-19. She has closed the gap on current leader Brignone in the overall season standings to 70 points.Shiffrin, who has been sidelined for two months with an abdominal injury that required surgery, is expected to return to racing in a night slalom in France on Thursday, the final women's race before the world championships. The start of Sunday's race was delayed for 15 minutes as organizers needed more time to prepare the course after overnight snowfall and rain. Ariane Raedler had a nasty tumble when she came off the course and lost balance over a patch of softer snow, but the Austrian got up quickly and appeared to have avoided injury
