As the Mideast conflict grows, we must listen to each other. Views that cause discomfort are precisely the ones with which we must engage.
As law students at the University of Ottawa, we are taught the importance of promoting justice, fairness and peaceful conflict resolution. These principles are foundational to our legal education and shape our interpretation of the legal disputes we study in law school. These same principles ought to shape our thinking on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Every life lost is a tragedy, and my heart goes out to all those impacted directly or indirectly in Israel and in Gaza, who are suffering the consequences of Hamas’ grotesque terrorist attacks.Over the Thanksgiving weekend, rallies held across Ontario shed light on the passionate and deeply held opinions surrounding the conflict, with some, regrettably, glorifying terror and violence. Politicians of all stripes rightly condemned such hatred, emphasizing the importance of peaceful discourse.
In Ottawa, gestures of solidarity include the Peace Tower, a symbol of our nation’s commitment to peace and mutual understanding, illuminated in blue and white, and our flag flown at half-mast. Leaders of the major federal political parties united in condemning the horrific attacks by Hamas, reflecting our leadership’s broader commitment to condemning violence and advancing peace.
In this context, it is essential for us, as law students, to consider our role in de-escalating hateful conversations on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is often too easy to write off views with which we disagree, but those are precisely the ones with which we must engage.. Fortunately, our legal education equips us with the tools to engage in respectful dialogue, and to seek a deeper understanding of the different narratives around this ongoing conflict.
We understand that some of our colleagues have strong feelings influenced by their personal experiences and backgrounds. Rather than drawing lines of division, let us encourage open, respectful conversations that challenge stereotypes and preconceived notions. Education, empathy and dialogue are the building blocks of peace.
