The independence of the administration of justice is so important that it cannot even appear to be politically directed.
As much as I frequently complain about the bias of some judges or the uselessness of our bail and parole systems, it would be even worse to have politicians intervening directly to order specific actions.
Still, it’s almost as bad for Smith to claim she had done so when she clearly hadn’t. It makes her look clueless about how the justice system works. And, it makes her look like a liar. Neither of which is a good look for a premier. Smith promised to pardon those who had already been fined . And she could pardon them, if she passed a law giving her government the power to pardon non-criminal offenders.
