There were 4,752 deaths from firearms involving children in 2021, an 8.8% increase from 2020.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Deaths from firearms remain the leading cause of deaths among children in the U.S. and reached record highs in 2021, according to a study released Monday.
The death rate was 11 times higher for Black children compared with white children, the study says. It’s the largest disparity since the study was started four years ago. There was a 12.4% increase in the firearm homicide rate among Black children from 2020 to 2021 and a 13.3% increase in multiracial firearm homicides, the study says. There were little to no increases among white, Asian American, and American Indian and Alaska Native children.
The study says white children account for 78.4% of all firearm suicide deaths, while Black children comprised 14.1%.
