ICYMI: The Guards, who have won seven of their last 10 games, moved to within 1 1/2 games of the first-place Twins in the AL Central.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There was no head butt from Josh Naylor this time. Manager Terry Francona might still be recovering from the last one.

Emmanuel Clase earned his 21st save in 23 chances by retiring the side in order in the ninth. Center fielder Myles Straw made the final out on a running snow-cone catch against Rob Refsnyder in front of the bullpen wall in Fenway’s triangle. The Guardians, trailing 6-5, tied it in the eighth on a double by Straw. First baseman Franchy Cordero’s third error of the night made the run possible.

“When he missed, he really paid for it,” said Francona, referring to Quantrill. “He really paid for his mistakes.” The Guardians took a 3-0 lead in the third. Franmil Reyes opened with a double against Nathan Eovaldi and went to third on Owen Miller’s single. Then Boston’s defense came into play. Jones sent a grounder to Cordero at first. Cordero was going to throw to second to start a double play, lost control of the ball and then turned and made a wild throw back to first that rolled into the dugout. Reyes scored and Miller reached third. Cordero was charged with two errors on the play.
