Learn about the GST/HST credit, a quarterly tax-free payment for eligible Canadians with low and modest incomes. Understand the eligibility criteria, payment amounts, and how to access this benefit.
The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment designed to assist families with low and modest incomes in offsetting their tax burden. The government generally considers you eligible if you are at least 19 years old and a Canadian resident for income tax purposes a month before the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) makes the payment and at the beginning of the month. Those under 19 must meet at least one condition, such as being a parent living with their child.
Shared custody parents may be eligible for half the credit. If your income is $680 or more if married or have a common-law partner, you won't qualify. You don't need to apply; the credit is automatically considered when you file your taxes
