“The accountability of the workplace for many people is invaluable,” bestselling author Gretchen Rubin told Forbes during a recent live subscriber event.
. Those who need external motivations or expectations to maintain their habits, she said, “have to think about how do I replace that? You hear about people going on Zoom—you’re on mute, I’m on mute, we’re just working under each other’s gaze—because that provides accountability.”
To help, she knows of people who have set up separate laptops , made rules they could not sit on their bed to work or even hidden the remote from themselves . “The harder you have to work for something, the more likely you are to to feel like, oh, it's not worth it right now,” she said. “One thing that we all need to grapple with is that the traditional five-day/two-day pattern that we've all been raised in has, for many people, been wiped away,” Rubin said. “I think that's going to be very difficult because habits form most easily when behavior is very regular and predictable.”Rubin believes most people fall into a framework she developed where they exhibit one of four “tendencies.” These include “obligers” ; “upholders” ; “questioners” ; and “rebels” .
