Professor Martti Nissinen, in the faculty of theology at the University of Helsinki, will be the conferrer. Because 2023 is the 100th anniversary of Finland's Freedom of Religion Act, Nissinen wrote that freedom would be the theme of the faculty's conferment ceremony. "The theme encompasses religious freedom, human rights, and the state of the world, topics manifested in the selection of individuals due conferral of honorary doctorates and heard in the speeches given at various stages of the conferment festivities," he said.
Thunberg was chosen as one of eight recipients. Most of the listed honorees are involved in the study of religion, with the exception of three. A professor emeritus of sociology and a co-director of the Cambridge Centre for Political Thought were also selections who are unrelated to theology.“By choosing Greta as an honorary doctor, we declare that we want to be as bold and influential as she is," the professor reportedly said in an interview with Helsingin Sanomat.
