Grendel actor Abubakr Ali gets brutally honest about the show being scrapped ahead of its premiere. 'I was really excited for what this role meant for my community...There is a space and need for stories like this...'

Abubakr Ali, who was set to star in the upcoming television series Grendel, has slammed Netflix over scrapping the already-filmed series before it aired. Grendel was set to be a Netflix television series based on the comic book series of the same name. The Grendel comics began in 1982 and were originally published by Comico, before eventually being published by Dark Horse after Comico's bankruptcy in 1990.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In September 2021, it was announced that the Grendel comic series would be adapted into an 8-episode television series for Netflix. It was announced shortly thereafter that actor Ali would be set to star as Hunter Rose in the series, making him the first Arab Muslim man to play the leading role in a comic book adaptation. Filming began on Grendel in August of last year, and the series wrapped filming in early 2022.

Why Netflix Scrapped Grendel After Shooting Entire Season Ali's Grendel co-star and The Flash alum Andy Mientus also commented on the series' cancelation, saying that having an entire already-filmed season be completely scrapped stung. Mientus also said that he was "optimistic that we find a new home." While the series was fully filmed, it's unclear how far along Grendel was in the post-production process, but it was not fully completed.

While there seems to be hope from the Grendel cast and crew that the show may be picked up elsewhere, Netflix's decision to scrap the series is a major blow. As Ali writes in his post, Muslim actors only make up one percent of speaking roles on television, and it would have been a major step to have an Arab Muslim man starring in a major superhero project.
