The growing number of retirements pose a challenge for Republicans, who are looking to flip the House and maintain control in the Senate.
Oregon Representative Greg Walden announced on Monday that he will not be seeking re-election to Congress, becoming the 22nd Republican lawmaker to retire or resign ahead of the 2020 election cycle.
The 62-year-old lawmaker joins a growing list of Republicans who have abandoned the idea of running for re-election this year. In fact, Walden is the 18th Republican to announce that they are either retiring or resigning from the House of Representatives. New York's Chris Collins was forced to resign from the House earlier this month after pleading guilty to charges involving insider trading. Collins was the first House Republican to endorse President Donald Trump during the 2016 election.
Meanwhile, just four Democrats have announced their retirement from the House including California's Susan Davis, Iowa's Dave Loebsack, New York's Nita Lowey and Jose Serrano. The only Democrat in the Senate to announce his retirement so is Tom Udall from New Mexico.
