The Greater Victoria School Board says it was surprised to receive a ministerial order from B.C.’s education ministry demanding that SD61 create an updated “student safety plan” for the year. The move was controversial, with the school board – backed by B.C.
On Wednesday, Victoria Police Chief Del Manak said he was “extremely pleased” by the development, adding that a ministerial order like this is something “that I have not seen in my career before.”In a statement Thursday, the SD61 board said it was surprised to receive the order from the ministry, since it had already met with B.C. Education Minister Rachna Singh and Minister for Public Safety Mike Farnwroth in a meeting on Aug. 8.
“We are concerned that rather than engage in continued collaborative efforts alongside us and police services the minister took this preemptive and unprecedented step so close to the provincial interregnum period,” said the school board. The SD61 board adds that it’s interested in student safety in a “holistic” sense, which includes physical safety, as well as psychological, emotional, cyber, spiritual and environmental safety.
