Those delightful moments in the tent where bakers thoughtfully rush to provide assistance to each other, put on a brave face to get through a baking disaster and beam with pride when their bake was praised by judges, Kyla Kennaley and Bruno Feldseisen. Jodi tempers chocolate by touch During Season 3’s chocolate week, baker Jodi Robson famously shared how she always tempers her chocolate by touch rather than using a thermometer.
Baker Jodi Robson famously decided to temper her chocolate by touch rather than using a thermometer. Chocolate tempering is notoriously finicky and technical, difficult for most amateur bakers, even using the very scientific method involving thermometers to measure specific temperature. Tempering her chocolate by feel showed a level of baker's intuition that proved Jodi was a natural baker. During Season 4’s Cake Week, peak chaos unfolded in the tent when Bertie Diaz’s mirror glaze caught fire on the stovetop.
Raufikat Oyawoye-Salami, a calm-headed IT engineer from Milton, came to the rescue. She handled the crisis like a pro, giving an upset Bertie the support he so desperately needed to get his own cake back on track. Only when Bertie calmed down, did Raufikat return to her own station to complete her showstopper.
WATCH | Scene from Season 4 of The Great Canadian Baking Show:During Season 4’s Bread Week Technical, the bakers were tasked with making soft pretzels with a warm beer-and-cheese dip. In this clip, Raufikat begrudgingly reveals to hosts Ann Pornel and Alan Shane Lewis that she doesn’t like cheese — in fact, she’s never even tried it. Baker Raufikat Oyawoye-Salami makes a shocking confession in the tent.
Clearly, experience with cheese is not essential to being a great baker because Raufikat was named Canada’s Best Baker for Season 4 and went on to host her own series,Aimee made buns in an oven During Season 5, Aimee DeCruyenaere created a retro-styled kitchen oven made entirely from baked bread dough, complete with a hot dog handle and a functioning oven door which opened to reveal actual mini-baked bread rolls inside. Brimming with lighthearted creativity, her bake was an edible masterpiece.
At a very young age, Aimee was one of the most inventive and imaginative bakers to compete in the tent. Season 5 star baker Vincent Chan was making a Halloween-themed cake featuring a ring designed to look like a mirror from Snow White . With just two minutes to go, you hear a collective gasp as the delicate caramel ring topper snapped in two. Vincent smoothly grabbed a blowtorch to fuse his creation back together.
It was amazing to see him pull off this incredibly delicate sugar work and save it when disaster struck with the help of his friend Steve Levitt. Crisis averted! Minutes from the clock, baker Vincent Chan rescues his showstopper with a blowtorch. Pierogies cause real tears in the tent During Season 7’s Bread Week, baker Kathy Neiman delivered one of the most emotional moments ever seen in the tent.
She created a centrepiece filled with savory pierogi-inspired buns for her showstopper bake. Baker Kathy Neiman brings judge Kyla to tears with her pierogies. The creation reminded Kyla of her own mother’s own pierogi making tradition. Overcome with memories, Kyla was brought to happy tears capturing the emotions that food can trigger.
During Harvest Week, Kathy brought some unexpected ingredients to the tent. She wanted to push some boundaries and include an ingredient that was sustainable and protein rich: crickets! Her ‘Crickets & Quilts’ creation featured a quilted fruit top with kiwi, dragon fruit and pomegranate set over a white chocolate ganache and a crust made with ground cricket powder. She invited the judges to try some actual dried crickets.
For Bruno, this was a far cry from traditional French culinary traditions, but he gamely jumped in with both feet! Baker Kathy Neiman brings some unusual ingrediants into the tent. Bruno later praised the texture of the bake and noted that the crickets added a rich, nutty flavour to the crust that paired well with the fruit and ganache.
Fan favourite baker Andrei Godoroja was already a legend for creating some of the most iconic bakes ever seen in the tent, including a cookie piano and a 3-tier choux masterpiece, when he was the winner of Season 2. During the Showstopper challenge, her multi-tiered cake collapsed into a pile of ruined layers.
With time running down on the clock, Elora made her cake one layer shorter and leaned hard into her geode rock motif creating a bake that absolutely blew the judges away. It was one of the most creative, high-stakes saves the tent has ever seen and the first step in her journey to winning the cake plate in Season 8. Baker Elora Khanom experienced a heart-stopping disaster that turned into one of the best recoveries in the show’s history.
