The concept of a fixed link between the island and Labrador remains a priority for the provincial government after decades of being bandied about by successive governments.
Millions of dollars were spent in the 1970s, with blasting even taking place in the Straits before the project was cancelled in 1975. The concept is fraught with economic uncertainty including the infrastructure needed on the Quebec side of the border and questions as to whether the link would be widely used since travelers would have to cross the St. Lawrence River and drive the Quebec north shore before crossing into Labrador.
Labrador Affairs Minister Lisa Dempster says the idea is something government is still considering especially now that the Trans-Labrador Highway is finally complete. She says a pre-feasibility study provided a number of options presented “that we can move forward on there.” “These things are going to happen,” Dempster says.
