March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness month.
It may sound like a great initiative to help 850 people gain the funding required to receive vital services however, if there are no staff to provide services, people won’t be able to use the funding they received. Simply stated; no staff, no service. These 850 people will be added to service waiting lists because there are people who have had the funding for quite some time and are unable to access services that fully support them.
Why? You may have guessed - lack of staff. A workforce challenge in this field is not a new issue – the pandemic and it’s after effects have made it worse. When will an administration realize that an investment into this workforce is an investment into people with developmental disabilities? Gov. Shapiro’s decision to make workforce investments for many other professions while excluding the developmental disability workforce sends a message that people with developmental disabilities and their families are unworthy of support. There is still time for Gov. Shapiro and our lawmakers to correct this during budget negotiations, and I certainly hope they do so.Anne Couldridge, Carlisle, Pa.
