S.V. Dáte is a senior White House correspondent at HuffPost. His new work, The Useful Idiot, captures Trump's failed management of the coronavirus pandemic and his corruption of the Republican Party. Dáte is the author of five novels and previous two political biographies, including one of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush.
A native of New York City, Trump chose to have the delegation from Florida give him the delegates necessary for a majority of the total available. He moved his official residence to the state during his first term as president.The 2024 nomination is Trump’s third in three election cycles and cements his continued hold on a party he had almost nothing to do with until he began his run for president in June 2015.
Four years later, as the COVID pandemic raged and state and local governments imposed limits on the number of people who could congregate indoors, Trump staged his nominating convention at the White House, where he would not be subject to such rules and could have as many people as he wanted. The choice flouted federal law and longstanding norms regarding the use of presidential resources for campaign purposes.
