Republican gubernatorial nominee Daniel Cameron has appeared to soften his hardline opposition to abortion.
FILE - Kentucky Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron speaks to supporters during the first stop of his multi-city campaign tour, June 2, 2023, in Richmond, Ky. Cameron appeared to soften his hardline opposition to abortion on Monday, Sept. 18, telling a Kentucky radio station that he would support amending the state's abortion ban to add exceptions allowing for the termination of pregnancies caused by rape or incest.
“Throughout his time in office, even before this campaign began, Daniel Cameron has made it clear that he supports Kentucky’s extreme abortion ban with no exceptions for survivors of rape or incest," Beshear campaign spokesperson Alex Floyd said in a statement. “He has repeated that position in public statements, questionnaires, press interviews and debates.”
linking Cameron to an extreme scenario — requiring young victims of rape or incest to carry their pregnancies to term. Cameron staked much of his political identity to his staunch opposition to abortion. As attorney general, his office has defended the state’s abortion ban in court. During a Republican primary debate in March, Cameron expressed support for the law.
Addia Wuchner, executive director of Kentucky Right to Life, said recently that the rape and incest exceptions have become the “talking points” of abortion-rights groups and politicians.
