Google's latest version of Android (Go edition) could attract entry-level smartphone users to its ecosystem:
) of consumers in India run out of smartphone storage every three months, and 29% run out of space at least once a week.
Improved security with encryption. The new OS includes Adiantum, a new form of encryption Google built for entry-level devices and In February. Adiantum is five times faster than the AES encryption standard on current low-power Android devices, and it brings encryption to certain entry-level devices that previously weren't able to encrypt data without affecting device performance.
Android OS saw quick acceptance by manufacturers and consumers alike since it launched 18 months ago, and adoption should jump with the newest version. Over 500 manufacturers have launched more than 1,600 Android devices in over 180 countries — up from over 200 devices and more than 120 countries in August 2018. And these devices make up 80% of entry-level Android phones activating today, per Google.
As a result of the improvements and growing device selection, Google could attract new mobile users — like feature-phone owners — to its ecosystem. The limited availability of affordable smartphones of decent quality, combined with the advent of the smart feature-phone segment, is likely preventing some feature-phone users from making the leap to smartphones.
With the new Android 10 , Google is placing Go edition device manufacturers in a better position to lure feature-phone users into their ecosystems. Boosting smartphone adoption among feature-phone users is important to Google as it's a massive opportunity to grow use of its software and services while also driving overall internet usage, both of which benefit different business segments at Alphabet.
