A driver in Qualicum Beach who attempted to stop a suspected impaired driver was found to be intoxicated themselves, leading to a 90-day driving prohibition. This incident is one of three such cases reported by Oceanside RCMP on New Year's Eve.
A driver in Qualicum Beach who was trying to stop what they believed was an impaired driver from getting behind the wheel was found to be intoxicated, Oceanside RCMP says. On New Year’s Eve around 5:30 p.m., RCMP was called to a potential impaired driver in Qualicum Beach. When officers arrived, they found a second driver trying to prevent the suspected impaired driver from hitting the road.
Officers then smelled alcohol on the breath of the driver trying to stop the other from driving, so they conducted a breath sample test, which the 50-year-old driver failed. The original driver was tested and found to be sober, but was just having trouble driving in the dark. The 50-year-old driver was given a 90-day driving prohibition and their vehicle was impounded for 30 days. This was one of three 90-day driving prohibitions and 30-day impoundments Oceanside RCMP issued on New Year’s Eve to intoxicated drivers — one involved a driver in a single-vehicle crash who failed the screening test.“Unfortunately, there are many people who still believe it is okay to drink and drive,” says Sgt. Shane Worth of the Oceanside RCMP. “Impaired driving is an offence, it is dangerous to everyone using the roads and our officers are targeting impaired drivers every day of the year to take them off the street.”on average 61 people die on B.C. roads each year due to impaired driving. This amounts to roughly 21 per cent of all fatal crashes in the province.
