Toronto\u0027s disastrous public transit project known as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT stands as a warning to other cities across Canada.
All this while the Progressive Conservative government of Ontario Premier Doug Ford appears as befuddled about how to get the monstrosity finished, as were the previous Liberal governments of Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne, under which construction began in 2011.
In Toronto, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT was sold to the public as an easy, convenient way to move commuters from east to west across the city, and vice-versa, in sleek, comfortable LRTs, stopping at 25 modern stations along its 19-km route.Article content Reality turned out to be years of increased congestion and gridlock at major intersections as construction of the LRT divided the city in half, with those living and working south and north of Eglinton Ave. — a major east–west arterial road in Toronto — having to factor in dramatically increased travel times just to cross Eglinton.
Residents along the route have endured years of construction noise, dirt and cars idling outside their apartments and homes attempting to navigate along or across Eglinton Ave., which at many intersections became an almost comical maze of traffic cones and cement barriers resembling a go-cart course.
