WE'KOQMA'Q, N.S. — Former We’koqma’q chief and band councillor Alexander Googoo is being remembered as a kind-hearted, humourous, loving friend to all who knew him and an outstanding leader to the We’koqma’q community.

“Our band welcomed him all the time, he was a good friend to everybody in the band, you know, he was close. And like I said, when we were teenagers, he used to come to my house, and we would hang out all the time,” said Johnson. “He made you feel important. He made you feel like he hasn't seen you in a long time and you were just rekindling and start joking around right away. His whole personality was very magnetic, he had that energy to just put a smile on people's face.”

Along with being a talented musician, he was also an excellent teacher in music because of his calm nature, said close friend and former We’koqma’q Chief Morley Googoo, who recalled the time that Sandy called on him when a band member was out sick. Sandy Googoo, right, and Tom Johnson formed a friendship through their collaboration in the band, The Relatives, and enjoyed spending time and playing music together. CONTRIBUTED - ContributedSandy was known to have very strong family values, said Rod Googoo, both when he was growing up and when he started his own family.

“I even remember being in a bicycle gang when we were kids and you know, like he'd always turn around to make sure everybody was there. We never really grew up with money, we were always poor, but we didn't know we were poor because we had a rich life.
