Two groundbreaking films, Brady Corbet's 215-minute postwar epic ' The Brutalist ' and Jacques Audiard's Spanish language, genre-bending trans musical ' Emilia Perez ,' dominated the 82nd Golden Globes on Sunday. However, the organization's strongest support was bestowed upon these two unconventional cinematic endeavors.
'The Brutalist' was awarded best film, drama, positioning one of 2024's most ambitious films as a frontrunner for the Academy Awards. Shot in VistaVision and released with an intermission, the film also secured best director for Corbet and best actor for Adrien Brody. During his acceptance speech, Corbet emphasized the importance of filmmaker approval on the final cut. 'I was told that this film was un-distributable,' Corbet stated. 'No one was asking for a three-and-a-half-hour film about a mid-century designer in 70mm. But it works.' 'Emilia Perez' received the best film, comedy or musical award, bolstering the Oscar prospects of Netflix's leading contender. It also garnered awards for best supporting actress for Zoe Saldana, best song ('El Mal'), and best non-English language film
