We are from wildland-urban interfaces Palo Alto and Orinda, and we’re both students at the Claremont Colleges, where we study climate change. We think goats are an easy, effective way to protect our communities and other communities in wildland-urban interfaces from wildfires and noxious smoke. Goats arenʼt picky eaters. They eat lower branches of trees, broadleaf weeds and other shrubbery — practically any available vegetation. Goats even enjoy plants that are not native to California, like black mustard. Black mustard is widespread in California, blooming on our hillsides, mountains, and alongside highways. It flourishes in the spring and then dies in the early summer, leaving dry stalks in warmer temperatures.
