Global Jam showcase gives young Canada Basketball stars a taste of glory on home soil. The six-day event includes pits international men’s and women’s teams of under-23 athletes against one another in downtown Toronto.

There are a handful of logical reasons Canada Basketball is undertaking its biggest event in years this week.“Our athletes haven’t played enough at home,” chief executive officer Michael Bartlett said Monday morning. “More events on home soil. Full stop.”

The chance for all of them to play at home was the driving force behind the founding of the tournament. “I asked how many of them had worn the Maple Leaf in a competition at home and two hands went up. To be 19, 20, 21 and not have repped your country on home soil? That’s what the other sports have done very well and we haven’t. We’ve got to host more at home.”

“It’s amazing, because we get to inspire, motivate and encourage young women and show them that they can get to this level,” Edwards told The Canadian Press at a court dedication ceremony in Regent Park on Monday morning. “We’re able to show them a high calibre of basketball, right here at home, and it’s going to be so fun to compete in front of friends and family, who are used to seeing me on TV.

“FIBA ages out at 19 and then they go straight to senior team. We actually have a handful of under-23s on our senior men’s team … but generally, the four guys who were just drafted into the NBA, they’re probably looking to the ’28 team.Canada Basketball has expanded the tournament with ancillary events that they hope turns the week into a celebration of basketball here.
