Globe editorial: With Toronto transit plan, Doug Ford redefines ‘gravy train’ GlobeDebate
The planned Eglinton West LRT? Although its route runs through a low-density neighbourhood, the province wants the line buried. That will delay construction by years and substantially increase costs.
Instead, Queen’s Park wants a downtown relief line that isn’t integrated with the rest of the subway system and doesn’t use the same technology as the rest of the subway system, but would instead be “a truly unique transit artery spanning the city.” No one has any idea what that means. The Scarborough subway? The Ford government’s plans are so slapdash that its March 22 letter said it wants to ditch the city’s one-stop subway plan and replace it with a three-stop ending at Scarborough Town Centre; four days later, the province said it favoured a three-stop subway with Scarborough Town Centre as theUnderlying all of this is the province’s goal of “uploading” the subway.
