Shares were mostly lower Monday in Europe and Asia, though Chinese benchmarks surged on expectations of lower financing costs following a policy decision by the central bank.

Investors were awaiting updates on the signing of a trade deal between the U.S. and China and keeping a wary eye on North Korea.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.3% to 28,319.39 but most other benchmarks fell. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.8%, ending the year at 23,656.62. Japan's markets will be closed until Jan. 7. Kim has set an end-of-year deadline for the U.S. to make major concessions to salvage a fragile nuclear diplomacy that hit a major setback at a summit meeting with President Donald Trump in Vietnam's capital Hanoi.
