While significant progress has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, a new study from The Lancet HIV journal reveals that rising infection rates in Canada indicate the ongoing public health threat of HIV. Despite decreases in global infection rates and fewer HIV-related deaths, only a few countries are on track to meet the United Nations' 2030 target to end HIV as a public health threat.

However, a new study from The Lancet HIV journal indicates that the world is still far from eliminating HIV as a public health threat , as evidenced by rising infection rates in Canada . Between 2010 and 2021, global HIV infection rates dropped by nearly 22 percent, driven largely by progress in sub-Saharan Africa.
In Canada, the situation is reversing, with a 35 percent increase in new HIV diagnoses in 2023 compared to the previous year. Despite the increase in infections, fewer people are dying from HIV in Canada and globally
