TORONTO — Canadians waking up to a worldwide technology outage that disrupted airlines, hospitals and banks on Friday may be having flashbacks to a widespread telecom outage from two years ago.
A report on the incident by Xona Partners Inc., which was delivered to the CRTC earlier this month, says that outage was caused by a configuration error during a network upgrade, prompting a flood of data to core network routers, which crashed. Experts have said both incidents serve as examples of the risks inherent to companies relying on common technology providers amid market consolidation.The airline denied an Ontario couple from boarding their flight in June after they refused to check in their carry-on luggage. The two argued they didn't want to be separated from their valuables and medication.
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is back on top in India after losing its crown in the world's second-largest handset market 18 months ago, but has to share the honour with domestic rival Vivo. Xiaomi took an 18 per cent market share in the second quarter with shipments of 6.7 million units, putting it back in the No 1 spot after six quarters, according to data released by Canalys on Thursday.
