NEW: Number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has reached 10M, while the global death toll has climbed to nearly 500,000, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
Meanwhile in India, which has the world’s fourth-biggest outbreak, confirmed cases have passed 500,000, federal health ministry data showed on Saturday, with infections surging in major cities including the capital New Delhi.
Iran, one of the worst-hit countries early on in the pandemic, launched a campaign Saturday to motivate a reluctant public to use face masks as the country faces a sharp increase in infections and deaths from the coronavirus. Since restrictions to stem virus spread were gradually lifted from mid-April across the country, cases have increased again.
