Global Affairs officials defended the purchase of a $9-million luxury consular property in New York, saying the government chose one of the cheapest options available that meets department criteria, despite criticism from opposition parties.

'We don't look at that kind of features, we look at the value of the property, and we felt that the value for money was there.” Cousineau also said that Clark had “no influence” in the selection and approval of the new property, when pressed by MPs. “He was not involved in the consultation or decision process,” he said. Clark, a veteran broadcast journalist, was appointed to the diplomatic post in February 2023.
