The new contract, which was approved by nearly 61 per cent of the union, includes wage increases of 6.8 per cent in the first year, 3.5 per cent for the following two years and three per cent for each of the last two years, including a 10-per-cent bonus, according to United Steelworkers, Local 9449, which represents workers from the Raglan mine in Nunavik, Que.Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the Financial Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

“We went on strike for the first time and our members stood tall,” Éric Savard, the union’s president, said in a press release. “This is now an established option that we have to seek respect and better working conditions.”Article content The Raglan mine, which is set to restart production Sept. 12, has been in operation since 1997 and annually produces about 40,000 tonnes of nickel. As one of the country’s largest nickel producers, a prolonged closure of the mine could have hurt global supplies of Class 1 nickel, some analysts said.
