Against a backdrop of great international tensions and differences, Glencoe District 35 officials wanted to have an event showcasing how people of many backgrounds can come together. That wish came together Oct. 19 when District 35 hosted the inaugural Family Belonging Night at West School. It was an evening where visitors could enjoy different types of food, watch international dances and a shared art project among the activities.
The U.S. is a melting pot with all the cultures. Especially now it is really important to appreciate who we are and where we come from and celebrate that.” A few feet away from the food, everyone had the chance to write hello on an international hand sign. That group included Adam, Aydin and Lamis Golabek and their mother, Fatima Hussain. “We are a Pakistani-Polish family,” Hussain said.
