Ridley Scott's historical movies tend to be extremely divisive for one particular reason, and the plot for Gladiator 2 seems to be on the same path.

Gladiator 2 undeniably has some pretty big shoes to fill, but some audiences may be concerned that it’s going to make the same contentious choices as the original. The director has a tendency to take creative liberties with the stories that he presents as true in these historical dramas that he’s become so synonymous with, and while that’s his prerogative, it can be a little disappointing for anybody looking to really lose themselves in an authentic exploration of the past.
While filmmakers obviously have complete freedom over what they want to write, there’s a level of responsibility when dealing with real-life events to stay true to what actually happened — at least when it’s being presented as an accurate depiction of reality. If Scott falls victim to the same controversy that’s characterized Gladiator and his other historical dramas, including the upcoming Gladiator 2, then Napoleon could be in trouble before it’s even been released.
