Giovanni Guidetti, a renowned Italian volleyball coach with a prestigious international record, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Canadian women's volleyball team. OTTAWA — Giovanni Guidetti has been appointed as the new head coach of the Canadian women's volleyball team, Volleyball Canada revealed on Tuesday. The 52-year-old Italian has been at the helm of Turkish club Vakifbank Spor Kulubu since 2008. Under Guidetti's leadership, Vakifbank has secured seven Turkish League titles, five FIVB Club World Championship gold medals, and five CEV (European) Champions League titles.

Notably, in the 2012-13 season, Guidetti guided Vakifbank to an unparalleled 52-0 season, culminating in five championship trophies. On the international stage, Guidetti most recently steered Serbia to a seventh-place finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He has also previously coached Turkey (2017-22), Netherlands (2015-17), Germany (2006-15), and Bulgaria (2003).Guidetti succeeds Shannon Winzer, who has been coaching the team since 2021. Winzer is transitioning to a new role as the team's high-performance director. During Winzer's tenure, the team achieved its highest-ever world ranking of eighth and secured a program-best 10th-place finish at the Volleyball Nations League in both 2023 and 2024. Despite these accomplishments, Canada has not qualified for the Olympic women's volleyball tournament since 1996. Canada narrowly missed out on qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing just one point short of second place in its pool at a qualification tournament.'I have always admired and respected the way Canada played volleyball and how much it has improved in recent years,' Guidetti stated in a release.
