We speak to Inside producer Giorgos Karnavas about the a claustrophobic psychological thriller starring Willem Dafoe, which follows one man trapped in a penthouse apartment:
Willem Dafoe has been taken to some dark places in his career, but Inside, which sees his character Nemo stuck in a luxe penthouse, may be one of his most cerebral yet. Inside follows an art thief named Nemo who embarks on his latest con, gunning for three valuable pieces of art in a luxe penthouse apartment. When he arrives, though, things don't go according to plan: one of the pieces he is looking for is missing and the apartment's security functions kick in, trapping him inside.
Good options all around. But actually diving into the movie, how did you come across Inside? What was it about the story that drew you in and made you want to be involved? It has been an extremely educational process in terms of [the] development of the material. And it has been extremely insane for us to produce it because it's our first studio film. We had to do a very interesting mix of ways of producing - to build your own set because, of course, we couldn't get an apartment in New York But to have every day on set, I think it helped Willem perform in a very natural way.
You cannot imagine how much stress we had from the statics and all that because you have all the signatures, you bring the people there, but they say to you, we've never done it before. All your calculations and all scientific knowledge on that is there, but it's like an earthquake - you build a house for an earthquake, and you say it's going to endure it, but you need to go through [it] to be sure.
Giorgos Karnavas: This moment is intentionally planted because we wanted a big surprise. We wanted him to find something else. And with him, the audience, because the room and the house until then, we have seen. So first, we were looking for a new surprise in the script. We had a very clear artistic reference. [Laughs]. Some people [on] the internet are thinking we did it on purpose to connotate the Green Goblin, which was not the case, but it served us very well.
