We chat with GinnyAndGeorgia director James Genn about visiting a darker tone in season 2, and the show's collaboration with Mental Health America:
Warning: SPOILERS for Ginny & Georgia season 2.Finally making its long overdue return on January 5th, the second season of Ginny & Georgia managed to deliver an even more authentic and relatable story than the first. While Ginny and Georgia's familial bond remained the focal point of the series, Season 2 allows several of the characters to develop and expand upon their individual arcs.
James Genn: No, I was not involved at all. I came to this like everybody else on the planet by turning on Netflix and binging out on the first season. I was blown away by it. I thought it was such a beautiful show, and so I went after it. Then I met the showrunners, Deb and Sarah, via Zoom and got involved just in the second season.
We knew that we would be visiting darker tones throughout the series in Season 2. We knew going in that episode 1, especially, was going to have to visit that world and that we would be teasing all the beautiful, fun, lighter elements of the show as we went on—especially into the second episode. So I got to experience all that range of emotion and all that range of tone that Ginny & Georgia is so famous for.
There was this fun little night before Christmas sort of feeling of anticipation about getting the show back on its feet. It had actually been, I think, almost a couple of years since the cast had worked together on the show because we had been stalled by COVID. It had been a long time.
EPs can wear a lot of different hats when working on a production, so were you involved with crafting Season 2's arc at all?
