Drinks manufacturers have been hit by a raft of cost increases, from the price of wheat – which is used to make many types of gin – to glass bottles, energy, transportation and wages
The grain is an essential component of many types of gin, which is made by infusing a base grain with juniper berries and other botanicals. Ian McCulloch, managing director at Surrey-based brand Silent Pool Gin, described the situation as “horrific”.Ukraine is sometimes called “the breadbasket of the world” thanks to the huge amount of grain it exports, but because of the war it is not clear if it will be able to harvest the commodity, or get it out of the country, this year.
